The painter and sculptor, Stefan Schwaighofer composes and constructs steel sculptures built out of basic geometric shapes and refers to them as Volumina.
This name can be traced back to the Russian avant-garde artist Malewitsch, whose famous "Black Square" is an icon of modern art. In his view, a body not only has a form but also a content (volume),
a kind of aesthetic message. This is a far better definition for the character of a 3-dimensional art object, as it also incorporates the world of feelings appertaining to the artist and the observer.
The form of the chair has another root, however, which goes back to the famous Duesenberg's of the American 30's. These were certainly the most beautiful and luxorious cars ever and were the inspiration for
the gently curved form of the arm rests and the generously heavy design of this piece of furniture. The artistic aspect and the technical processing gives every single Duesenberg a unique character.
